F A N T A S Y C H E F Let me just take a moment to mock those who pegged this one up as a full scale disaster for Mr. Dickson - with a full SIX players (as many as Beffy Nose and The Dead Pool combined, I'll have you know) and a deal of interesting discussion this is my biggest success to date. (Stop laughing.) The discussion has come in part from John Colledge: > I think I see what you are getting at here. What might have been easier > to cope with from both your point of view and the player's would have > been if we all gave you suggestions for the seven courses then there was > a vote each round. You get the points your dishes pick up. That's quite a valid point of view, and would make for a different and quite possibly better game, but I'm just curious to see how this turns out. > Your problem here is that some people will be suggesting starters and > others will suggest soups. It might have been easier to provide guidelines. I thought that was part of the attraction of the game, myself. To be honest I think you could well be right, but it's a fairly experimental sort of game to say the least, and I'd like to play it out and see how it goes. Pete Birks submitted a menu and may have printed his choices in GREATEST HITS. I have a nasty feeling that it becomes an optimal strategy to go for dishes which will match his choices, and guarantee you points, but I don't think people will be dull enough to do that. Pete Birks is older, richer, more respected and just plain wiser than me, so I'm not going to say anything nasty about him. Plus, he did send me a freebie copy of GH (which I enjoyed rather a lot, nearly to worth-subbing-to levels). Which was nice. A couple of players have only submitted menus (or is it menues? ) for food they'd like, rather than what they'd serve. I have decided not to apply these as "serve" menus as well, on the grounds that I think the game is serving and wanting-to-be-served different things. T U R N O N E IDEAL MENU SERVING UP JOHN COLLEDGE Deep-fried nibbles in light Carrot and orange soup herby batter (crudites, greens) PETE BIRKS Chinese chicken and coriander (N/A) Clear soup DENNY COLLEDGE Lentil soup, bacon bits, Pea and ham soup French toast JAMES HARDY Spring rolls Haggis (on the grounds that the Colledges are playing) GEOFF BROWN Indian starters: seekh kebab, (N/A) onion barei, samosas, raita ANDY MANSELL Confit of duck Cream of tomato soup Not many matches striking me as being clear at all - which will come as no surprise. So here are the points that I shall award... JOHN COLLEDGE: 1 (Pete Birks wants soup) + 3 (Denny Colledge wants veg soup) = 4 DENNY COLLEDGE: 1 (Pete Birks wants soup) = 1 JAMES HARDY: 2 (Geoff Brown wants meat in part) + 3 (Andy Mansell wants meat in a sort of processed, pated way) = 5 ANDY MANSELL: 1 (Pete Birks wants soup) + 3 (Denny College wants veg soup) = 4 You can appeal against these, giving reasons, if you feel REALLY strongly about my point distribution, if you think it really necessary. A clue for round two: there seems to be a split between people wanting what could be roughly described as starters and people wanting various forms of seafood. / And that's pretty much that for issue pi (if only I could do the symbol \ \ using this printer!) of GIT. Hope you enjoyed it, and see you again soon! /
