My favourite TV ad, and I must confess that it's been so for about the last year, is a slightly obscure one for a premium-rate chatline (which I've never rung, so the ad hasn't worked) which you'll only ever see after about 11:30pm and seldom more than once a night on each of channels 3, 4 and 5. The hardest job in advertising must be to sell a number to people. This is irritatingly catchy and never fails to crack me up. Really! No matter how miserable I'm feeling, a guaranteed smile on my face every time. Join in with me when you know it: "D-D-D-D-DON'T BE BORED! CALL FRIENDS!" "What's the number now?" "Oh! Eight! Nine! One! Forty-seven, forty-seven, forty-seven!" "CLICK oooohhh..." I have never worked out what causes the CLICK but the yelp after it sounds absolutely filthy. Brilliant. /-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\ | TRAIN issue D. Fat Controller: Simon Hornby, 77 Rowan Road, Merton SW16 5HZ | \-----------------------------------------------------------------------------/ Short issue this time. I've had startup details from Huddo and Chris for Monopoly. Dan hasn't said anything to me about the SoD game - I think the workload may be getting on top of him. Anyway, Flobalopolopoly is held over until people give me startup details. Chris says Phil Hannay has sent me stuff, but I haven't seen it. Here's my address for you: 1st floor, 77 Rowan Road, Merton, London, SW16 5HZ, or you can send it to Chris, who will email it to me. My job situation is, shall we say, fluid, so not much time to write Train this Month. Anyway, I doubt this will be out in time for the London Qualifier, bbut if it is, I look forward to seeing you there, if not, then it was nice to see whoever was there! /-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\ | TRAIN issue D. Fat Controller: Simon Hornby, 77 Rowan Road, Merton SW16 5HZ | \-----------------------------------------------------------------------------/ So there we have Train, at the very, very forefront of sub-sub-zine technology. Four issues down the line and we've nearly got a gamestart. (Technically, we've nearly got three gamestarts; you can probably still sign up for Monopoly, just by writing something random and silly to Simon; you can sign up for the Killer game that Simon's going to run; Dan Lester will run Sea of Despair as an outside GM within Train. Send orders to me and I'll pass 'em on to Simon, and, if it's necessary, Simon will pass 'em on to his outside GM, Dan.) I wonder just why Ian Willey didn't take me up on my offer to let him join the trend of glorious sub-sub-zines? Personally, I regard it as a great disappointment... Writing a couple of days after completing the editorial, I note (alas, the hard way) how easy it is to get out of a good routine. Just two or three days on the trot where your body tells you that you need to get more sleep, so you get ten hours' sleep instead of, say, seven or eight, and, wham, you're back to sleeping between 6am and 2pm (or worse) again. All this lack of exercise means I'm piling on the weight; about another four pounds since my illness a couple of weeks back. I'm over thirteen stone now, which is as heavy as I've been, and about half a stone more than I should be (on the mass-to-height-squared ratio). The more I think about jobs the less I'm motivated to do anything about them.So things have got a bit less fun since then. Ah well; there is an advertised position with Pearson Television, who I already know people at, so I would hope to at least get an interview for that post. This is an excuse to go to Dahn Sahf, and quite possibly over Oxford way to look up some university friends. (Postscript: just today I've seen another position with a local cable TV company which looks distinctly doable, relatively interesting and eminently applyable-for. So things are starting to look up just a little bit.)
