Quick update on the job situation: Pearson Television International didn't even give me an interview for their high-powered Executive Assistant position, which was a shame (though somewhat predictable); Challenge TV didn't want a game show fan to work on a game show channel (wha? Another, more carefully-targeted, application to them may well follow soon); Comcast Teesside, the local cable TV franchise, gave me a first interview for a computer-fiddling Junior Analyst position and I'll find out in a couple of days if that's led to a second one; Bell Fruit, who make fruit machines, want someone to design games for them, which sounds like my cup of tea (but I'd have preferred the magazine where I heard about the job to have turned up more than one day before the application deadline!) and I managed not to see Hewland's advert in the Guardian until two weeks after they printed it, which is a shame, because I know the boss and would dearly like to work on their shows. So, lots of cock-ups, but they're coming a lot more thick and fast than they used to be, which has to be a step in the right direction. However, I'm stuck in Middlesbrough for now, which isn't nearly as much fun as Oxford, as it's an unquiet, dysfunctional household containing a tired 60-year old, a very unwell 56-year old and a confused, depressed 21-year-old who understand each other less and less as time goes by. You get a few good days, then a bad day, a few good days then a bad day; while the most recent bad "day" has been exacerbated by a spate of colds and similar miscellaneous illnesses, the good days of Oxford were something very special. I know who my friends are... and how good it is to have them! For those who don't know, a horrid illness prevented me from releasing GIT 8 with all the appropriate games in. So GIT 8 appeared in two halves; the first turned up in OMR 23 and contained all the usual chat; the second half went out to players only about three weeks ago (and is reprinted here for the benefit of everyone else) and contained mostly games. It also contained, it's fair to say, a reasonable degree of misery. However, a couple of weeks after getting GIT done and dusted, I went down to Oxford for a week. I hadn't had a proper holiday this year apart from the cons, good as they all were, but this was a full week away back in the company of my friends. It was great. All the fun of Freshers' Week - without all the work and hassle that had been associated with it when I was at Keble College getting my degree. I guess that I had been getting lonely without having the company of twenty-year-olds and thereabouts more than I had realised. Oxford itself is a town with lots of attractions and there's always a lot going on. All the best Oxford traditions were upheld: kebab van jollity, the fun of the key arrangements for the computer rooms, a trip to the laundry and so forth. (These may not count as the best traditions in your book, and I suppose they don't quite match up to punting, Pimms, May Morning and Bumps Racing, but part of the joy of Oxford is that everyone has the chance to define their own traditions; Rachelle Stretch, freshwoman of Keble, please take note.) Lots of new faces as well; Sofiah Yusuf (13-year-old starting a maths degree at all-girls college St. Hilda's) turned up to the maths society who, traditionally, put on their best lecture of the year at the very start, and she brought most of the Yusuf family, including the apparently even more talented younger brother, with her. And Oxford wouldn't be Oxford without a trip to the Diplomacy Society; for better or for worse, almost certainly my closest friendships have been made with folk there. New faces there too, who were ceremonially presented with OMRs in an attempt to make them join; although we bucked a recent trend and had a game of Diplomacy running, considering who was involved (Dan Lester, Mark Stretch, five randoms who knew the game but not the players) the outcome of Mark Stretch out first, Dan Lester topping the board (at least partly because of that fact!) and the five randoms surviving to the end (coaches turn back into pumpkins at the end of 1906 at DipSoc) was perhaps not too surprising. Flagship's PBM convention was good fun, too, though there always seems to be too much time and too little to do, whereas it's the other way round at hobby cons; zines represented were One Man's Rubbish (on the freebies table - or, rather, it was the freebies table) and, er, Rhubarb Rhubarb. The GM panel was a success because the people involved were so optimistic about the future. My own opinion on this iRЁёA‘с1бij<Є gе/vњѕ№ыцсмзвЭШУОЙДЏЊЅ№№№№№№№№№№№№№№№№№№v vuџџџџџџџџ'K@ёџNormala "A@ђџЁ"Default Paragraph Fontаџ@ўџ џџџџ РFMicrosoft Word 6.0 Document MSWordDocє9Вq
