If he can make his Jordan perform next year, though, then I think the critics will have been proved wrong. Rubens Barichello was another star who promised much and didn't really shine. However, his one moment of individual brilliance did make Jackie Stewart ever so happy, so I don't think you can really complain. Jarno Trulli got talked about a lot as shining-talent-for-the-future #376, but only scored three points. Oops. Mika Salo scored two points for Tyrell. Actually, this probably makes him an overachiever. UNDERACHIEVERS (again, in descending championship points order) Heinz-Harald Frentzen did come third in the championship, but seldom seriously threatened to deserve consideration as a top star. Maybe this shows how good the Williams really was. At least he retained his drive; next year he should be able to shine. (If he does exactly as well next year as he has done this year, but Williams don't win the championship, we'll probably all rave over him as the perfect number two. Motor racing, eh?) Jean Alesi came fourth equal with David Coulthard, but made a lot of fairly serious errors and turned himself from star-in-the-making to star-that-never-was. The same thing could (probably rather unjustly) be said about Johnny Herbert, whose partnership at Sauber was the justly-deserved relegation he earned. Eddie Irvine. I like Eddie Irvine. I always have done, since he made his debut as a hot-headed wild man. Formula One needs a good hot-headed wild man. However, his hot-headed-wild-man-ness was merely a disguise for the fact that he isn't a good driver. When he started driving well everyone thought he had come of age and were too eager to forget a long string of poor performances. 24 points in the second best car is underachievement. Shinji Nakano and Ukyo Katayama were token Japanese rent-a-drivers, and not particularly good ones. They were good for their sponsors, though; their names were probably mentioned more than those of the midfielders, but only in the context of "...and Schumacher comes round to lap...". Not a lot of future in Formula One. Jan Magnussen was Stretchy's top tip for unheralded driver most likely to surprise us all. He didn't. Larini made so little impression on the championship I can't remember if his first name is Nicolas or not. The Minardi Drivers. Enough said. ./0 nop}ЧШк"ГДУі ї ” • Ђ ч ш і М Н Ь  ЁЌљњљѓюъхснйгЯЫЦТОЙЕБЌЈЄŸ›—’ŽŠ…}xtpkgc^U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]^a ]a ]a ]a ]^a ]a U]a U]^a U]^a $ijkwТУб)ђѓЫЬжЁЂГqr~рсъ;<=K|}’/0:eћїѓэщхрмигЯЫЦТОЙЕБЌЈЄŸ›—’ŽŠ†€|xsokfb]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]^a ]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]^a ]a ]a ]a $efr(-;[\iСТШ$,-@NOћіђющхрмигЯЫЦТНЙЕАЌЈ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a U]a ]a ]a U]a ]a мЅe#Р O'J,&l,&l&& & Њ[(&ь&˜&Tю&[ MS Sans Serif Symbol ArialTimes New RomanTimes New RomanWho was hot and who was not in F1 in 1997 I'll be surprised if Mark doesn't do one of these, or something similar, himself, but here's how I saw the Formula One season in immediate hindsight. (This is, not too surprisingly, being written fairly soon after that European Grand Prix, so my own particular brand of prejudices will be even more skewed than usual.) OVERACHIEVERS (in decending championship position order, not extent of overachievement) Jacques Villeneuve had to win the World Championship to have a successful season, and he did. It wasn't exactly a convincing win, though, and like Damon Hill's win last year, will be somewhat tainted with accusations that it wasn't the driver that won it so much as the car. However, his name is the one on the champions' list. Michael Schumacher almost blew the rest of the field away completely. It'll be interesting to see if next year he maintains the fallacy (?) that his car doesn't compare to the WIlliams ones; I think he had most of us convinced this year. So when he gave several superb drives in the second half of this year I think he was well on his way to becoming the most popular German sportsperson in Britain since... (insert one of Bernhard Langer, Boris Becker, Steffi Graf or Jurgen Klinsmann if you're a Spurs fan). However his blatant, cynical (understandable?) attempt to remove Jacques Villeneuve in the last race when he couldn't win by fair means won't have done him any good. David Coulthard won races in an uncompetitive MacLaren, which hasn't happened for some time, and was easily the best British driver. I would say that he deserves a better car still, but am still somehow not convinced that he would be an actual title contender even in a top-flight car. Here's hoping he can prove me wrong! Giancarlo Fisichella scored twenty points in a Jordan, a feat akin to Ravanelli scoring more goals than anyone else in last year's Coca-Cola Cup. He should be looking to win races even with next year's Benetton. His performance gave me particular pleasure because I was the only one to spot him as a joint-cheapest-driver Ѓ1,000,000 bargain in BUM's Fantasy Formula One game. Possibly the discovery of the season. Olivier Panis also picked up an impressive tally of points - sixteen - in a Prost, which was on the midfield side of all the midfield cars. Prost and Jordan have looked more like serious contenders to join the Big Four than other recent midfield teams, and with the Prost name behind them it's tempting to see them making the big leap up. Johnny Herbert scored fifteen points in a Sauber and was always there-or-thereabouts. It's instructive to note that in 1996 his partner at Sauber was Heinz-Harald Frentzen. Did Williams really pick the right one? Alessandro Wurz got a podium finish in his first three races and did enough to get a full place at Benetton last year. Being a test driver for a top team is not a bad position at all to be in. Well, I wouldn't say no, at least. Pedro Diniz scored some points, which is far more than anyone seriously expected of him. Martin Brundle proved himself to be Murray Walker's natural successor and was the high point of ITV's coverage. THE MIDFIELD (er... neither overachievers nor underachievers, but somewhere in between) Gerhard Berger impressed only once this season. Yes, it is time to retire, in that case. Mika Hakkinen did enough to retain his abnormally high regard as someone who should do a lot better than he really does, but little more. Today's win was tremendously hollow. Will he ever have a really good season? Ralf Schumacher scored thirteen in his first season but did almost as much harm as good. Should mature into, er, a reasonable number two, perhaps as a partner for his brother? Let's not think too hard about that one! Damon Hill could have taken this season off.
