Spacefiller: I know nothing about Magic: the Gathering, and am happy not to. Kim Head stuck a card in with the last LRP and I want to check it's not valuable before I burn it. It's called "Swamp". (As opposed, of course, to what I am today; a 22-year-old male teetotal non-smoking straight-intentioned virgin.) I still think it's a good idea for a game and this is the right time of year to offer it, being the first GIT after MidCon. It's like a bourse, but the rules with regards to working out who won are a bit more interesting. Let me know before the next deadline if you want to start playing, and we'll get this party started! 1. Each player starts with 1000 shares of each of 12 types: Dolchstoп, SNOT, On The Game, One Man's Rubbish, The Cunning Plan, The Freaky Fungus, The Sprouts of Wrath, Spring Offensive, GAME, Pigbutton, Springboard and Project TBA. At the start of the game, each share is worth Ѓ1. 2. Orders for this game consist of how many of each share you wish to buy or sell that turn. 3. Each time 100 units of a share are sold, its value drops by 1p; each time 100 units of a share are bought, its value rises by 1p. Only complete multiples of 100 shares affect the shares' value; thus if 299 shares in OMR were sold, its value would drop by 2p. Each share value is adjusted once at the end of each turn by the aggregate amount of shares bought or sold. For instance, if one player sells 365 shares in On The Game, another player sells 486 shares in On The Game and a third buys 252 shares in On The Game, the movement is (-365-486+252)=-599, so OTG falls 5p. 4. A player may not buy more shares than he can afford, though they may buy less. Any surplus is held as cash for future transactions. 5. A player may not sell more than 500 shares of any one type in any one turn. A player may buy any amount of a given share in a turn. 6. A share will never drop below a value of Ѓ0.01, unless the zine of the same name is deemed by common assent to have folded. Trading in a share ceases at once, and the shares have no value. 7. New players may join the game at any time, and are given 1000 shares of each type. I reserve the right to stop the game if there are too few players. 8. Every turn each player receives Victory Points according to the total cash value of their shares and cash held, after prices have changed. Each player should therefore attempt to maximise the value of their portfolio each turn. The last turn shall be announced in advance, and may be announced to be worth double points. The player with the highest total of VPs accumulated over the game after the last turn wins the game. Ties are broken randomly. 9. As well as price changes driven by purchase and sale in the market, share prices may arbitrarily change due to the performance of the zines with the same names. Project TBA refers to the best-performing hobby zine (re)started in 1998 by either Dave Horton or Gihan Bandaranaike; should neither of them (re)start a zine, the share will be deemed to perform worse than all the others. Players should therefore purchase shares with the expected performance of the related zines in mind. These arbitrary changes will be made after regular changes due to purchase and sale, but before calculation of VPs earned, in the issue after the results of any Qualifying Event come out. 10. Qualifying Events will include The Zine Poll (not the Diplomacy Zine Poll) and may also include any similar poll conducted before then. Only the performances of the zines corresponding to the twelve shares will be considered; the share with the same name as the worst-performing zine will have its price multiplied by 1/6, the share named after the second worst-performing zine will have its price multipl
